IMPERFECTIONS BY KALIS

WOUTER KALIS (VISUAL ARTIST / FATHER)  AND  ROSCO KALIS (SOFTWARE ENGINEER / SON)

PROPOSAL SUMMARY

Wouter Kalis has embraced the impossibility of perfection in manual execution of his work, man’s attempts at perfection are destined to fail. Mistakes, deliberate or genuine, contribute to the depth of content. Digital representations approach perfection much closer but are less interesting from his point of view.

Together with his son Rosco he has worked on programming imperfections into digital art.

In the prototype deviations are incorporated in the background color of the panels and in the shape and regularity in the black and white lines, to represent the imperfections of physical art. Wouter and Rosco will include different color schemes for the backgrounds and they want to play with different levels of deviation/imperfection of the shape of the lines, causing the imperfections to be more or less noticeable.

ABOUT

WOUTER KALIS

Wouter Kalis has a background as a visual artist. He went to Art School at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam from 1995-1999. After graduation in the Free Media department he worked for many years as a painter.

In 2006 he was awarded with the Dutch Royal Painting Prize, handed out by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

In the last decade he has also shifted to object and furniture design, under the label MIN-studio. These designs were shown in i.a. Milan, New York, London and Amsterdam.

WORK

Both his paintings and his designs stand out by straight lines and minimal approach. In his work, Wouter Kalis tries to keep reducing and concentrating. Everything can be less and better as long as the balance is kept. The placing of one line dictates the placing and color of the next. Repeating the proces of applying paint in a preconceived scheme in the most perfect manner, and failing.

In many of his paintings the focus is on horizontal stripes of contrasting colors, on canvas and directly applied onto walls.

More recently, he has shifted medium to 3-D design. He has designed a series of beds and lights, where the signature stripes play an important role.
