IMPERFECTIONS
In his work Wouter Kalis makes minimalist compositions of horizontal lines on canvas or paper. From early on Wouter has steered away from the possibility of meaning in his work. Instead focusing on composition and execution. Always trying to execute to perfection and always failing.
He applies paint layer upon layer in a loosely preconceived composition where the implementation, the repetition and the failure at perfection contribute to the depth of content. These elements have become part of the signature of his work, both on canvas and in paper.
The process of making and executing the composition is quite sensitive, one line dictates the colour, position and size of the next. The imperfections are both accidental as well as on purpose and thus have become a stylistic choice.
Together with his son software engineer Rosco Kalis, they have worked on an NFT project of computer generated digital representations of the physical work on paper. Digital representations of minimalist art can be executed to perfection but are less interesting to look at. Together they have attempted to recreate the human touch in digital art, the imperfection.
The colors of the digital panels are directly derived from the colors of the paper used for the physical work. The digital works can thus be reproduced using real paper.
